Handle of the Broom and the Hairpin Loom….. lace crochet in Vogue Knitting
“The harmony of these techniques flow easily one into the other. Handle of the broom and the hairpin loom, repurposed from the tasks of the home front. … “ (lyrics from Twisted Stitch song cycle, by Lisa Daehlin, set to music by Stefania de Kenessey, world premier at Cornelia Street Cafe happened in January 2013).
My eye and my spirit find great pleasure in these two lace-making techniques. It’s only one reason why I love singing their praises – whether when teaching them in workshops, or including them as subject matter in a cabaret show. Hairpin Lace and Broomstick Lace Crochet allow for a lovely drape in the fabrics they create (drape, a sometimes elusive thing in certain types of crochet). Vogue chose one of my shawls (which combines these techniques in some not-all-that-usual ways) to be included among the fashions in the Spring 2013 Vogue Knitting Crochet Issue.
