My eye and my spirit find great pleasure in these two lace-making techniques. It’s only one reason why I love singing their praises – whether when teaching them in workshops, or including them as subject matter in a cabaret show. Hairpin Lace and Broomstick Lace Crochet allow for a lovely drape in the fabrics they create (drape, a sometimes elusive thing in certain types of crochet). Vogue chose one of my shawls (which combines these techniques in some not-all-that-usual ways) to be included among the fashions in the Spring 2013 Vogue Knitting Crochet Issue. Click here for Preview of the Fashions.
Howland Public Library, Beacon, NY

Tunisian Crochet: Exploring a Hybrid Technique

with Lisa Daehlin

Saturday, April 20, 2013; 1:00-3:00pm

The technique of Tunisian Crochet is a Hybrid of Crochet & Knitting, resulting in a fabric with a woven quality. Learn how to make the basic Tunisian Crochet stitches (simple/knit/purl), and expand those skills to incorporate the use of two colors and to create a variation in lace. No preparatory work is required for this workshop, however, you are most welcome to bring a small piece of knitting or crochet (a rectangular swatch approx 5” wide would be a nice size) onto which you could build some additional stitches using the Tunisian Crochet technique. This optional idea of bringing in a pre-made swatch gives an added dimension of incorporating this technique into stitch-work with which you are already familiar. We will also make swatches starting “from scratch” so no worries if you don’t have time/occasion to do any work beforehand.

Materials: crochet hook (size h, i or j) (this can be a Tunisian/afghan hook, but a regular hook without ergonomic or other thick handle would be fine too), 2 small balls of dk or worsted weight yarn (different colors).

Prerequisite: Know how to make a chain and a single crochet.

INSTRUCTOR:

workshops with Lisa Daehlin

IMPROVISATIONAL INTARSIA IN KNITTED LACE

The sinewy lines created by the increases and decreases of lace knitting provide a canvas on which one can explore the interaction of larger fields of color and the more delicate lines coursing through them. Using various lace and other stitch patterns, and blending them with intarsia color technique, this “guided improv” knitting exploration focuses on making choices in how to combine the various stitches as well as how to transition elegantly (or dramatically) from one stitch pattern or area of color into the next. The ridges and textures of the fabric help to inform those choices. Let the fabric speak to you as you knit and the work you create will be uniquely yours! The resulting fabric sampler serves as a palette of new ideas for maneuvering through combinations of texture, line, and color.

TUNISIAN LACE CROCHET

A hybrid of knitting and crochet, the technique of Tunisian Crochet results in a fabric with a woven quality in its more traditional version and a lace-like quality when using openwork techniques. In this introductory class, learn how to make the basic Tunisian Crochet stitches (simple/knit/purl), and then expand upon those skills to include color changing (stripes and cross-hatching) as well as some basic lace and textural stitches. By the end of class, participants will have swatched a variety of options of color and texture, ready to use them for any number of patterns and designs.

I’ve posted previously about this, and am happy to see yet another blog from Interweave talking about Dora Ohrenstein’s soon to be released book on Tunisian Crochet. Dora invited me to contribute a design to this multi-contributor book on a technique that is experiencing something of a renaissance.

Tunisian Crochet (also, know as Shepherd’s Knitting, Afghan Crochet, Crochet Tunisienne, among a few other names) is a hybrid of knitting and crochet, as is the tool used to make it. It’s also the title of one of the songs in the “Twisted Stitch: Songs of Love and Knitting” performance I’m slated to give (with Richard Pearson Thomas at the keys) at Cornelia Street Cafe on Tuesday, January 29th, 8:30pm. Stefania de Kenessey has composed a cycle of songs, each one waxing on about different knitting and crochet techniques. Check us out live in concert for this world premiere event. And check out Dora’s book. Here’s a photo of the sampler quilt/afghan I designed and stitched for the book…..
